First LEAF in Switzerland

A collaboration between the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) has brought a LEAF permanent laser scanner to Switzerland for the first time. The Professorship of Earth Observation for Ecosystem Management at TUM has leased one of its LEAF systems to WSL’s Remote Sensing Laboratory for two years to test the capabilities of permanent laser scanning at WSL’s forest test site in Birmensdorf near Zurich. In the next step, each of WSL’s 19 Long-Term Forest Ecosystem Research (LWF) sites distributed across Switzerland (https://lwf.wsl.ch/en/) could potentially be equipped with a LEAF system. This would strengthen site-level monitoring, enhance data collection, and enable the integration of permanent laser scanning with the multiple long-term measurements already conducted at the LWF sites.
